When all that’s left to do is watch the sun show up to greet the day …
I have a belief, or maybe it’s better to call it a pipe dream, that the way for agriculture to meet up with Mother Nature is to set our farms and ranches up to be as deeply rooted in the relevance of our souls as they are in the relevance of our pocket books.
Only by soulfully feeding ourselves will we truly feed the world.
Happy New Year to you! I have had a very busy fall with it being harvesting time for my beef cattle, and I was behind on reading your blog posts. Just caught up and had to mention that I enjoy your beautiful photography and words of wisdom.
I am guessing that even if you had no predator dangers, you would still want to have one or two guard dogs. I know I always feel better knowing that Maremma Bess is around, even though I interact more closely with my Border Collies. Every day when I go hiking around, the Border Collies are always in my sight, while Bess will disappear for long periods of time. Just when I start to worry, she will magically appear! I think she is always keeping an eye on me to make sure I am safe, even when I don’t know where she is.
We got four feet of snow a week before Christmas, and it was no fun at all! Totally put an end to hiking around for the dogs and me. The snow was too soft for snowshoeing, so we were stuck. Then on Christmas Eve, it rained all day and night, and I awoke to a green Christmas. The dogs and I were thrilled (not to mention the sheep and cattle). Now there is just a few inches of snow which is actually quite pleasant.
I look forward to hearing more about your views on agriculture, your dogs, and your sheep this winter!
Hello Elva, Happy New Year. Wonderful to hear from you. I think you are right in that I will always appreciate having one or two dogs around. Company if for nothing else.
Four feet of snow is a lot of snow to handle. Wow. Here, we are hopeful for a significant accumulated amount of snowfall by winters end.
I am anticipating putting more regular effort toward the blog, – blogs are the equivalent of slowing down to enjoy the scenery and I’d like to be doing more of that. So grateful to have you along. I truly appreciate it.
